The site of events in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, historic Sumter County was established in 1800 and named for General Thomas Sumter, a Revolutionary War hero known for his tenacious spirit.

Located in the heart of South Carolina, Sumter County attracts new residents each year due to the comfortable climate, historic museums and exhibits, and numerous annual festivals and events, including ShawFest and the world-renowned Iris Festival.

Sumter County is home to Shaw Air Force – the area's largest employer – and the Air Force's largest combat F-16 wing -- the 20th Fighter Wing -- whose mission is to provide, project and sustain combat-ready air forces. Personnel at Shaw AFB keep new homes in Sumter County in demand.
