For college students, internships are one of the best ways to immerse yourself into an industry or role that aligns with your studies and interests. Internships can often be the biggest factor into deciding exactly what students will pursue after school—and for recent Mungo Homes intern Matt Johnson, it helped him kick off his full-time career months before graduation.

Matt is a senior at North Greenville University in Tigerville, South Carolina, pursuing a degree in accounting. Along with his studies, he’s played as an offensive lineman for the NGU Crusaders football team since his freshman year—only adding to his level of hard work and determination both on and off the field.

“I’ve always known I wanted to be a builder and follow that route,” Matt said. “My brother-in-law works for Mungo Homes, which is how I learned about them and their opportunities.”

During the summer of 2021, Matt worked as a Builder Intern in Mungo’s Savannah office. While each day offered a new opportunity to learn, every morning began with getting together a game plan.

“We would figure out what each house needed and prioritize projects,” Matt said. “The team decided which houses needed a walk-through, and we would go to make sure everything was built to the Mungo standard.”

Matt’s time as an intern for Mungo Homes solidified his dreams of working in the building industry. By getting hands-on experience from one of the best brands in the business, he witnessed how hard our team works to build beautiful, functional houses with the highest quality of craftsmanship and materials. One of his biggest takeaways was the importance of getting things done and sticking to the schedule—ensuring homes are built within a reasonable timeline and homeowners are happy with the overall homebuilding process

Mungo team members were thrilled to have Matt on the team for the summer, were impressed with his work and recognized he had a bright future ahead—which led to a full-time job offer from Mungo Homes months before he even graduated from college. In June, Matt will kick off his career in the Savannah office as a Builder Trainee.

“Matt has a young mind that can bring a lot of energy to the production team,” Area Superintendent Chris Vallillo said. “I believe he can also bring some perspective on younger buyers as well. We look forward to him joining our team soon!”
