On November 30, the Today Show’s Craig Melvin told the story of how his family, with the help of Mungo Homes, repurposed their family home as transitional housing for Family Promise of the Midlands in Columbia, South Carolina.

Pate Graham, Mungo Homes Corporate Director of Customer Experience, met Betty Melvin while serving on the board of directors for Family Promise of the Midlands. After learning about the family’s home, conversations began with the Mungo Homes Foundation about renovating the home for use as transitional housing.

As the project grew, more team members from Mungo got involved. Josh Miller, Columbia Purchasing Manager, enlisted over 30 trade partners to donate time and materials to the project. I repeat: they donated ALL the labor and materials, a value of approximately $75,000. Our only out of pocket expenses were for permitting and asbestos remediation. Demolition of the home began during the Mungo Homes Week of Service in May by Mungo Team Members.

Corporate Director of Architecture Kimberly Metler redesigned the Melvin house, expanding the footprint with the addition of a bedroom, bathroom and laundry room.

With Family Promise, families stay in transitional housing for a year and are asked to save 30% of their income to put toward permanent housing in the future. The Melvin family home welcomed its first family in September at the home’s ribbon cutting. Team members from Mungo Homes, trade partners, friends and family of the Melvins, and representatives from Family Promise were all in attendance.
