Stewart Mungo with honorary degree

Mungo Homes is pleased to announce that Stewart Mungo, CEO, received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Wofford College at the 162nd Commencement Exercises on May 15th.  Of Stewart Mungo, Wofford President Dr. Nayef H. Samhat said, “You have risen to the pinnacle of success in [your] chosen profession to offer tangible evidence that education is truly transformational.”

A 1974 graduate of Wofford, Stewart expressed his delight after the ceremony, “I’m really pleased that the faculty and the fellow trustees with whom I served honored me. Wofford doesn’t just ‘hand out’ honorary degrees.  The fact that the faculty goes through this process means so much.”

Stewart joined Mungo Homes, which his father founded in 1954, upon graduation from Wofford and it wasn’t long before he was running the company.  A visionary, Stewart’s expertise has been land acquisition, development, and infrastructure and utility design.  His leadership and well-earned reputation for innovative planned communities and fair business practices lead to his induction as the youngest member of the South Carolina Housing Hall of Fame in 2000.

Over the years, Stewart has served on countless boards, received numerous awards, and contributed millions of dollars to Wofford College and the Midlands of South Carolina; but it’s his family that gives him the most pride.  He was the first of six in his family to graduate from Wofford – most of whom are involved in the family business – and he hopes the same for his year-old grandson, Stewart.
